Why I Give - Joseph Hawkins '67

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE GIVING
"I give back because I believe McNamara put me on the right path academically. It helped me realize I could be ‘smart.’ McNamara also encouraged me to believe that I could do anything to which I set my mind."
As an alumnus, I am happy and extremely proud that Bishop McNamara High School is still going strong after 50 years. I give back because I believe McNamara put me on the right path academically. It helped me realize I could be ‘smart.’ McNamara also encouraged me to believe that I could do anything to which I set my mind.
Over the years, I continue to donate because it gives me an opportunity to stay current on McNamara events and developments. The building growth is a good thing. Years ago, I remember coming to an event with my father after McNamara had completed a significant campus expansion project. He seemed pleased with the progress, and that feeling meant a lot to me. I especially enjoy coming to McNamara events where I can interact with the students. I’m very pleased at how smart and focused they all are.
I know donors give for a variety of reasons. For me, it always starts with being asked to give – I never regret being asked by McNamara to do anything that ends up helping other young Mustangs. I would ask former Mustangs to reflect on how McNamara shaped their lives, and if that “shaping” and influence had a lasting impact. If yes, then think about giving back; think about how you can create that same opportunity and feeling for current students.
