Induction Ceremony of the ASL Honor Society for BMHS

On April 29th, Bishop McNamara High School held their American Sign Language Honor Society Induction Ceremony to celebrate and honor students who have made an enthusiastic commitment to the study of ASL and Deaf Culture.

The students that were honored at the Induction Ceremony are part of an elite group of students from across the United States and Canada. Out of hundreds of thousands of students learning ASL each year, these BMHS  students have persevered and maintained the highest grade point averages, have pursued excellence and committed themselves to teach others about ASL. For these reasons, they have been inducted into the BMHS first ASL Honor Society.

Ms. Tara Miles, Gallaudet University Adjunct Professor, Dancer, Choreographer, Performing Arts Teacher speaks at BMHS American Sign Language Honor Society Induction Ceremony

Bishop McNamara was fortunate to have Ms. Tara Miles as the Honor Society guest speaker. Ms. Miles is a Family Educator and Performing Arts Teacher at Kendall Demonstration Elementary School on Gallaudet University Campus, and an Adjunct Professor at Gallaudet University of Washington DC in the Department of Social Work. She is a dance who has performed nationally and internationally, as well as a professional choreographer. In her speech to the inductees, she talked about the importance of ASL to her and to the Deaf community; how these students can make an impact on the lives of the Deaf and Hearing by continuing to study and share their knowledge of ASL.

Mrs. Phyllis Ballenger (pictured right), our BMHS Language Department CoChair and ASL Teacher along with Ms. Danita Brooks, former BMHS Faculty and ASL instructor, Founder and CEO of English & Sign Language Masters, LLC (ESLM), editor, and author was the official interpreter for the ceremony.

The interpreter for the ceremony was our very own Ms. Danita L. Brooks, Founder, and CEO of English & Sign Language Masters, LLC (ESLM), an editor, and author. The parents, friends, and teachers pinned the students with their ASLHS pins while Ms. Miles facilitated the candle lighting ceremony.  BMHS Principal, Dr. Nigel  Traylor, Counselor Ms. Ashley Mickey and Ms. Miles distributed the student honor society certificates.

Ms. Phyllis Ballenger, BMHS ASL teacher and American Sign Language Honor Society sponsor welcomed the students into ASLHS at Bishop McNamara High School.

Congratulations to the BMHS ASL Honor Society members
