BMHS hosts professional development workshop - Culturally Responsive Teaching & Learning - with Professor Mo Thomas, a clinical faculty member at Urban Teachers in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins University School of Education

On Thursday, April 25th, Bishop McNamara hosted a professional development workshop titled, "Culturally Responsive Teaching & Learning," with Professor Mo Thomas, a clinical faculty member at Urban Teachers in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins University School of Education (learn more).  All employees attended the workshop that sought to help Bishop McNamara fulfill its mission to educate hearts and minds in a dynamic, inclusive Catholic school community rooted in the Holy Cross tradition.  An expert in helping school communities become more culturally competent, Professor Thomas helped our employees discover their own implicit biases and evaluate how they impact teaching and learning within our school community.   Participants were asked to engage in courageous conversations with each other and in larger groups to explore how our school community can meet the needs of each student in their development, which are themes and outcomes vital to Bishop McNamara High School as a Catholic and Holy Cross school.

Professor Thomas's commitment stems from her belief in the urgent need for culturally competent teachers that provide equitable and engaging learning opportunities for all students.

Bishop McNamara would like to thank Professor Mo Thomas for leading an excellent workshop as she employed her passion for creating and supporting equitable, engaging, and rigorous educational opportunities where students have ownership of their learning within our community.  In addition, thanks to Mr. Charles Shryock, Academic Dean, for inviting Professor Thomas to present to our employee community as this workshop will enable us to further our vision to form empowered leaders, inspired by the Gospel, who transform the world.
