Today is International Women's Day! As we celebrate the accomplishments of historic female figures throughout the world, here at Bishop McNamara we would like to honor and recognize the two groups of holy women that we are closest to: the female religious orders of Holy Cross and the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters who founded our sister school of La Reine.
Mother Mary of the Seven Dolors (pictured in the painting here), born Léocadie Gascoin in 1818, was a close collaborator of Father Basil Moreau and the first superior of the Marianites of Holy Cross. Today, the female religious orders of Holy Cross form three distinct congregations: Marianites of Holy Cross, Sisters of Holy Cross and Sisters of the Holy Cross. Father Moreau was very supportive and encouraging of the Sisters' role in the Holy Cross Order.
Following the teachings of Saint Francis and Saint Clare of Assisi, the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters (group picture here) have served as peacemakers in the spirit of "Pax et Bonum" (peace and joy), recognizing God's goodness and saving presence throughout the world. Who better to serve as the founders of our beloved La Reine? The Sisters encouraged the young women of La Reine to pursue their gifts and become motivated leaders in a variety of career fields. Their legacy continues today despite La Reine's closing in 1991, and we hope to inspire our young women as the Bernardine Sisters did.
Bishop McNamara High School would not be what it is today without these incredible women and all the work they have done throughout history.
