Four Bishop McNamara students participated in the Hampton University High School Leadership Summit. Malcolm Goodley '19, Bryson Boston '19, Kamryn Rodgers '19 and Wayne Bumbry '19 attended the event from July 8-14, 2018 in order to learn more about leadership and planning for their future.
The High School Student Leadership Summit is designed for rising high school juniors and seniors to focus on "The Leader Within." The week-long residential program provided students the opportunity to establish a plan for after graduation through several exciting and challenging workshops. Students explored basic leadership principles and learned how to improve their critical thinking and decision-making skills.
The program also featured speakers from a variety of professions and backgrounds. Students were able to meet people who have worked closely with top government officials, CEOs of businesses and consulting companies, and published authors, along with key people from Hampton University.
The Leadership Summit culminated with a brunch and closing ceremony during which the students divided into five groups, prepared and made presentations modeled after developing countries within the United Nations. Each group was tasked to select a country in the UN, research that county and determine the major issues/problems that the government faced in that country. The issues/problems included crime, poverty, discrimination, famine, natural disasters and lack of natural resources. Each group provided possible solutions for resolving the issues/problems for their respective country and ways to bring relief to the impoverished people.
Overall, the experience was quite rewarding and enlightening for the students. Dr. Jarris Louis Taylor, Jr., Director of the William R. Harvey Leadership Institute at Hampton University, shared that although this is the 21st year for the program, it was expanded to a week-long summit only two years ago due to its growth and popularity. Previously the weekend was held over the course of one weekend.
