Senior Jalyn Sandiford has been selected for Penn State Millennium Scholars Program

Jalyn Sandiford '18 has been selected for the Penn State Millennium Scholars ProgramWe are proud to announce that Bishop McNamara Senior Jalyn Sandiford of Clinton, Maryland, has been selected for the Penn State Millennium Scholars Program from among an exceptional group of highly motivated STEM students. This program will provide Jalyn with full funding for all four years of tuition at Penn State. 

After applying to Penn State, Jalyn then applied to the Millennium Scholars program.  Applicants must have a 650 or higher on the Math portion of the SATs and As and Bs in Science classes. Out of the 500 students that qualified and applied to the Millennium Scholars Program from all over the country, only 100 were selected to visit for a series of five interviews at the Penn State campus. Jalyn interviewed very well and went on to be awarded this prestigious scholarship. 

She is a member of the National Honor Society, the National English Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society, Fine Arts Diploma Endorsement (FADE) program, ACE Mentoring,  and the Science & Ecology Explorers.  Jalyn is a Peer Minister,  classical dance and tap student, who also plays Varsity Tennis. Her classes include Advanced Placement courses in English Literature & Composition and Physics, as well as Honors level courses in Calculus and Global Studies.  Jalyn loves to volunteer at her church and the Nanjemoy Food Pantry.

At Penn State, Jalyn will be a Biology or PreMed major, where she would like to focus on 2 different areas of disease - global diseases and diseases of Africa.  She hopes to continue her career post Penn State at UPenn Medical School to become a Cardio Vascular physician. 

She is looking forward to attending the summer Bridge Program at Penn State for 6 weeks where she will attend classes in calculus and English, and where she plans to enjoy connecting with twenty to thirty other Millenium scholars from all over the country.

The Penn State Millennium Scholars Program is designed for high-achieving science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) students who will become leaders in their chosen fields and are committed to increasing the diversity of professionals in STEM-related disciplines. Millennium Scholars are students with both the passion and the ability to advance the frontiers of knowledge and change the world.
