Bishop McNamara High School officially announces that Keith Veney, a BMHS alumnus from the class of 1992, will be joining our school as the Assistant Dean of Students and the Head Coach for the Boys' Varsity Basketball Team.
"This opportunity blows me away," said Coach Veney. "The chance to come back home and coach at my alma mater, there's no better feeling than that."
During his senior season at Bishop McNamara High School, Coach Veney scored more than 30 points per game under the direction of Coach John "Jay" Somerville, who was inducted into the BMHS Hall of Fame last year. Coach Veney then went on to Lamar University in Texas for two years, then transferred to Marshall for the remaining two years.
Upon graduating from college, Coach Veney played professional basketball for five years, travelling and playing internationally in France, Israel, Iceland, Poland and the Dominican Republic. Currently, Coach Veney runs his own company as a sports executive and hosts basketball camps and clinics for youth across the nation.
Coach Veney has made a career as an entrepreneur, training athletes to professional levels, including the 2017 Rookie of the Year Malcom Brogdon of the Milwaukee Bucks, and Paul Pierce formerly of the Boston Celtics – just to name a few. Coach Veney also worked with WNBA legend and Olympic gold medalist Tina Thompson. In addition to serving as a coach and mentor to Tina Thompson, Coach Veney worked with her in 2009 to form the She Got Game Classic, a competition for girls encouraging their involvement with sports that now boasts an international span.
When asked what goals he has for the upcoming season with Bishop McNamara High School, Coach Veney said that, in addition to leading the student-athletes into another season of excellence, he would like to encourage alumni involvement at games and with the student-athletes.
"I want to get the alumni more involved and bring the 'Mac Family' back," he said. "We're going to emphasize character, hard work, academic excellence and family."
"We're excited to welcome Coach Veney home," said BMHS President/CEO Dr. Marco Clark. "We have a proud athletic tradition at Bishop McNamara, and Coach Veney represents the very best of our core values – educating hearts and minds to be future leaders."
