On April 30, 2018 four juniors headed down to the Kennedy Center to receive an award for their remarkable artistic merit through the National Society of the Arts and Letters. The society, founded in 2004, has spent the past 14 years recognizing juniors in the Washington, DC metropolitan area with Awards for Excellence or Certificates of Merit. High schools are asked to nominate junior students who excel in art, literature, dance, drama, music, and musical theater for the awards.
This year Haedn Rho '19 of Waldorf, Maryland was the 2018 Excellence Honoree for Music. Haedn is a member of the Orchestra at Bishop McNamara and has participated in All-County, Tri-County, and the Washington Archdiocesean Honors Orchestra.
The Certificate of Merit was awarded to Trinity Newsome '19 of Upper Marlboro, Maryland for Art, Lauren Hawkins '19 of Cheltenham, Maryland for Dance, and Sydney Johnson '19 of Fort Washington, Maryland for Musical Theater.
Seniors Nia Hayes '18 of Fort Washington, Maryland and Theodore Sherron III '18 of Fort Washington, Maryland were also invited to perform as part of the awards ceremony on the newly renovated Terrace Theater Stage. Nia, a longtime member of the African dance program and lead in last year's production of Harriet & the Underground performed a modern lyrical dance to the music of Chopin. She is a two-year member of the dance team as well and served as the lieutenant of the Dance Team this year. Theodore, an active member of several Fine Arts and honors societies, performed a monologue from "The Glass Menagerie". Theodore also serves as the president of the International Thespian Society and was the 2017 winner of The Kennedy Center Excellence in the Arts.
Congratulations to these talented Mustangs; we cannot wait to see what the future holds for them!
