Our Mustangs sure are doing it big! We would like to congratulate our alumni, Jason Reynolds '00, for his latest book Long Way Down being named the Newbery 2018 Honor Book winner.

The Newbery Medal, named after the British bookseller, John Newbery, is awarded to authors who are considered to have the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

Beside the Newbery Medal, the committee awards a variable number of citations to leading contenders, called Newbery Honors or Newbery Honor Books

Jason's book, made up of free-verse poems, follows a young black teen who seeks revenge after the death of his older brother but is visited by ghosts of people from his past that were murdered from gun violence.

Jason Reynolds is a New York Times bestselling author, a Newbery Award Honoree, a Printz Award Honoree, National Book Award Honoree, a Kirkus Award winner, a two time Walter Dean Myers Award winner, an NAACP Image Award Winner, and the recipient of multiple Coretta Scott King honors.

The Bishop McNamara community couldn't be prouder of Jason and all the hard work he has put into his books. We can't wait to see what other awards and adventures are in his future!
