Building a Legacy: #1 Mustangs Capture Second Straight WCAC Title

The Bishop McNamara Girls Basketball program continues to set the standard for excellence, securing its second consecutive Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) Championship on February 23. In a disciplined performance at American University’s Bender Arena, the Mustangs defeated Bishop Ireton 59–45, a win that solidified their position as the No. 1-ranked team in the nation by High School on SI.
The victory was fueled by sophomore Jaylah King, who delivered a standout 27-point, 14-rebound performance. Junior Qandace Samuels anchored the paint with 18 points and 12 boards, helping the Mustangs maintain a lead they held for nearly the entire game.
The Vision of a Leader
For Head Coach Ron James, who was honored as the 2026 WCAC Coach of the Year for the second year in a row, the achievement is a testament to the daily commitment of his student-athletes.
"It's extremely hard [to get back here every year]," Coach James shared following the win. "But when you have a game plan and an amazing coaching staff like I do... it makes the process that much easier. We sacrifice a lot, and so do they."
Coach James emphasized that the team’s success is built on "stacking days" and staying true to their identity. "We’re going to play the right way, we’re going to play together, and we’re going to have fun doing it," he remarked regarding their culture. "We have the confidence and belief that we can beat anybody, but we're humble enough to know that anybody can beat us."
The Road to State
The Mustangs (27–2) have no intention of slowing down as they transition to the Maryland Private School Basketball Championship. After a dominant run through the opening rounds—including an 82–45 quarterfinal win over Riverdale Baptist, McNamara is focused on defending their state crown.
With the opportunity to achieve a "three-peat" in state titles and secure the final No. 1 national ranking, the team remains locked in. As Coach James put it simply: "Got to win. Got to keep winning."
Congratulations to our Girls' Basketball Team for a season to remember!
